Al-Yasa' (Elisha) (Al-Yasaʿ) عليه السلام
A Prophet Who Continued the Mission of Ilyas
Al-Yasa' (Elisha) (Al-Yasaʿ) عليه السلام was one of the honoured prophets of Allah sent to the Children of Israel. He succeeded Ilyas (Elijah) (Ilyās) عليه السلام in continuing the call to tawheed, urging the people to worship Allah alone and remain faithful to His commandments. Although the Qur'an provides only a brief account of his life, it places Al-Yasa' among the righteous prophets whom Allah specially chose and guided.[1]
The Qur'an first mentions Al-Yasa' while listing several prophets descended from Ibrahim (Abraham) (Ibrāhīm) عليه السلام.
Allah says:
"And Isma'il, Al-Yasa', Yunus and Lut—and all of them We preferred above the worlds."
Qur'an 6:86
Elsewhere, Allah again honours him among a select group of prophets renowned for their patience and righteousness.
Allah says:
"And remember Isma'il, Al-Yasa', and Dhul-Kifl. All are among the outstanding."
Qur'an 38:48
Although the Qur'an does not describe the details of Al-Yasa's prophetic mission, classical Islamic scholars explain that he continued the work begun by Ilyas, calling the Children of Israel back to obedience after many had again fallen into corruption and neglect of Allah's guidance. Like the prophets before him, his mission centred upon worshipping Allah alone, conveying revelation faithfully, and guiding his people towards righteousness.[2]
Legacy and Significance
The brief Qur'anic account of Al-Yasa' (Elisha) (Al-Yasaʿ) عليه السلام demonstrates that the importance of a prophet is not measured by the length of his narrative but by his faithfulness to Allah's mission. Although little is revealed about the events of his life, Allah honoured him by mentioning him alongside many of His greatest messengers and by describing him as one of the righteous and excellent servants whom He preferred above many of His creation.[3]
The succession from Ilyas to Al-Yasa' also illustrates the continuity of divine guidance. When one prophet completed his mission, Allah raised another to preserve the worship of Him alone and to continue calling people back to tawheed. Throughout the history of the Children of Israel, Allah repeatedly sent prophets to renew His guidance whenever people drifted into idolatry, corruption, or disobedience. Al-Yasa' therefore stands as another link in the unbroken chain of prophets leading ultimately to the final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ.[4]
